Vision of the Future - Part One

Initial Idea

Infographics - As one can tell if they have viewed any of my previous blog posts, I love infographics. I like the way they have a lot of information in a little space but not too much that they are overwhelming. The idea of using them in my classroom to enhance student learning is something that piqued my interest when I first read 180 Days by Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle. They use infographics in their teachings and I really wanted to try them in my practice.

The infographic above shows a breakdown of what infographics have to offer and what information one can gain from them. The infographic below shows how to create an attractive and informational infographic.

These will be included in my presentation because they can help students visualize why we create and use this visual representation of specific information.

Grade 9 - I truly enjoy teaching grade 9 English and I want to integrate the infographics to connect to the BC Curriculum and Big Ideas. I am going to try to connect at least one infographic to each of the main curricular points and Big Idea. With the infographic, I hope to add journal prompts or ideas on how I would use the particular infographic in my classroom.

Presentation - I am still trying to figure out how I am going to present this idea but when I do choose the platform that I am going to use, I plan to share this with my colleagues within my district. The different platforms that I am considering are Prezi, Google Slides, or Microsoft Sway.

Each of the above platforms has many positive attributes and I am comfortable with using all three, but I am not sure which one would highlight my information better. I am also considering doing a screencast of my collection of infographics (thanks Aaron for the inspiration) in order to get all my ideas across to my audience of colleagues.

  1. Good post that connects your passions with a great format for your students. I appreciated the research connections into how infographics works, how we process and understand information and some tips and tricks. This unit plan, with screencast video should be something you can easily share with others who also want to explore this format with their students. Its very important, especially with all the infographics that students are exposed to within their literacy exams in Grade 10 and 12.

  2. I am glad I chose this for grade 9 then. I didn't realize that infographics were prevalent in the 10 and 12 exams.

I truly enjoyed creating my project and I hope that it helps some teachers with the ability to use infographics in the classroom. Developing World Libraries and Mobile Device Access

Lucky Us When we consider what is available to us in our little section of the world, we should recognize just how privileged we are. We can pick up a book/e-reader, a phone, a computer/tablet and just move on as if it is nothing because, for us, it is a convenience that we take for granted.
